Saturday, April 29, 2006, Charlotte's Web
for the Performing Arts presented
"Woodstock:
Long Time Gone - An Evening of Peace and Music" performed by the Dean
Moriarty Jazz Band. The concert took place at the Mendelssohn Performing Arts
Center in Rockford, Ill.
Sponsored by Northern Public Radio and Rockford Peace & Justice Action Committee, the concert featured instrumental arrangements of music from the iconic hippie festival and original compositions inspired by the event. The standing-room only crowd was immersed in the sounds of 1969 as the band mixed news reports, festival announcements, and interviews with fresh takes on "Freedom," "Joe Hill," "Fortunate Son," "Purple Haze," and other songs from the Woodstock Music and Art Fair.
Musical settings ranged from solo, duo, and trio groupings to the full quintet, augmented by two percussionists, for a high-energy version of Santana's "Soul Sacrifice." Program notes featuring exceprts of song lyrics, quotes from festival performers, and commentary, helped propel the audience on a musical journey through the tumultuous sixties.
Plans
are underway for more performances of this unique exploration of the music
and sounds of the time. Stay tuned!
